Castel Nuovo - Naples

Often called Maschio Angioino, Castel Nuovo is the imposing palace and fortification commissioned by Charles I of Anjou. Its construction began in 1279. The arrival of the Aragonese in 1443 saw a complete rebuild of the castle. Five majestic round towers were added, along with the triumphal arch at the entrance. The latter is the result of the Neapolitan craftsmanship of Francesco Laurana and many other artists. The work was not completed until 1479. Between the mid 16th century and the 18th century, the new Spanish rulers tried to erase the memory of the Angevins and the Aragonese. One of their most damaging actions was the destruction of four frescos by Giotto. The castle was renovated by Carlo Borbone, but it was only in the 20th century that it was restored to shine in a new light.
